A tribute to John Berger (1926 - 2017)
I decided to pay tribute to John Berger as I had been a fan of his writings, his outlook on art and society for some time now. I designed and hand made postcards that contain one of my images of a quarry along with a quote of this famous storyteller.
One sunny day I followed a friend who took me to a quarry near Glasgow. I was immediately fascinated by the views and took quite a few photos that I was eager to work on later that day. The effect stunned me and I decided to use the images to make a point, to send a message to the world. The black and white landscapes I saw reflected my sunny thoughts on the beauty of our surroundings. Everywhere we look there is something that can catch our attention and if we follow the image, study it for a little while, we open up our minds and hearts to another world. Not just the one that is outside but the sensitive one that lives in the self and that helps us be kind humans.
Here's some of my favourite John Berger quotes on looking, art and photography, alongside the postcards I made :
“What makes photography a strange invention is that its primary materials are light and time.”
“Unlike any other visual image, a photograph is not a rendering, an imitation or an interpretation of its subject, but actually a trace of it. No painting or drawing, however naturalist, belongs to its subject in the way that a photograph does.”
“The true content of a photograph is invisible.”
“A photograph isn’t necessarily a lie, but nor is it the truth. It’s more of a fleeting, subjective impression.”
“Seeing comes before words.”
10 sets of 6 images in postcard format, with embossed quotes by John Berger were distributed across Glasgow. A small amount was made available for purchase at the Centre for Contemporary Art and Forvermore Tattoo Parlour.
